All legitimate logistics aside, you couldn't help but feel a tinge of injustice in the air when, at Pitchfork '08, vaguely African-inflected bands like Vampire Weekend and Dirty Projectors dominated the main stages while Extra Golden — the best indie-rock-Afro-dance hybrid of the decade, hands down — were relegated to the land of oaks-in-your-sightline. But the part-Kenyan/part-American benga rockers are nothing if not resilient, having recently endured a slew of much greater hardships. Thank You Very Quickly (Thrill Jockey) is the latest fruit of their doggedness, and that transcontinental groove has never sounded tighter: check out the title cut's transcendentally fluid funk.
