Hailing from, explicably, rural Alberta, Canada and now based in Toronto, the Rural Alberta Advantage wrote their album Hometowns (originally self-released but enjoying a wider second life courtesy of Saddle Creek) as a love letter to the places they've left behind. Their raw, eccentric, folk- and punk-tinged rock is punctuated with literate, earnest lyrics, sweet glockenspiel, frenetic drums, and Nils Edenloff's nasal, plaintive, sometimes off-key voice (all the comparisons to Neutral Milk Hotel are apt). But they're far from derivative: amid a backdrop of synths and orchestral touches, their live set crackles with the kind of ambition and energy only stuck-out-in-the-sticks-with-only-music kids can make.
