Aglow with an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Revolutionary Road, Michael Shannon reunites with A Red Orchid Theatre, the Chicago ensemble he co-founded. In Mistakes Were Made, he's backed up by a charming Mierka Girten, but the play is essentially a one-man showcase of Shannon's remarkable chops (propelled by Craig Wright's lively script). For a magnetic hour-and-40-minutes, Shannon gives us Felix Artifex, a wheeling-and-dealing New York theater producer embroiled in a fever-pitched battle with his telephone. Felix has an uncanny knack for virtuosic turns of phrase, and Shannon's timing is flawless as he jockeys phone lines, constantly modulating his conversations to outmaneuver a dozen antagonists in the effort to launch a quixotic, epic production.
