Believers in the classic power of large-scale oil painting, Robert Davis and Michael Langlois work collaboratively to give the venerable art form a fitting existence for our time. The final impact of their skilled paintings emerges stealthily in the realm of content. The pair plucks its subjects out of the divergent cultural currents around us — ranging from, say, Black Sabbath to French Neoclassical art — and conceives its work as installations in which multiple paintings tug at each other in unexpected, even irreverent ways. At the MCA, the artists present Into the Void: The Ballad of the Martyr as Told by Ingres, a set of paintings that coax political, pop-cultural, and art-historical reverberations out of the age-old (but ever-evolving) theme of martyrdom.
