Not to be confused with the yelpy Brit rockers of the same name, Chicago's the Race are a much more evocative affair. We last heard the band on the electro-organic Ice Station (2007), a beautifully spacious and eerily desolate record, inspired by Siberian history and Russian lit. Tonight, it celebrates the release of Exiles (on Jagjaguwar imprint St. Ives), which turns its gaze out west. With production help from Telefon Tel Aviv's John Eustis, tracks like "Black Boat" and "Ride the High Country" meld Violator-era Depeche Mode with Bpitch-style IDM thump, yet still call up Monument Valley grandeur and Terrence Malick's majestic isolation.
