Like Nabokov and a select number of other literary emigrés, award-winning Chinese author Ha Jin has done well for himself since settling in the United States, emerging in the mid-'90s as a skillful writer in his adopted English. Jin's latest short-story collection, A Good Fall, surveys the personal anxieties, generational conflicts, muddled relationships, and ultimately the resilience of various Chinese immigrants in Flushing, New York. Jin's own experience may have filtered into certain stories, but all along he has been a meticulous observer of ordinary lives (with all their slight peculiarities) and an elegant, humorous chronicler of quietly consequential events, with the ability to shift between different perspectives. Tonight Jin speaks with WFMT's Victoria Lautman.
