From time to time a director and an actor so inspire each other that they build an enduring artistic partnership: Jimmy Stewart was Frank Capra's go-to everyman, Diane Keaton was Woody Allen's muse, and Johnny Depp is Tim Burton's favorite hire. Our best local example of career-long collaboration is the working relationship between Brian Dennehy and Goodman Theatre majordomo Robert Falls, who has repeatedly directed the gruff leading man with estimable results. Dennehy now returns to Chicago to star in a double bill of one-acts, Eugene O'Neill's Hughie (under Falls' direction) and Samuel Beckett's classic Krapp's Last Tape, in a pre-Broadway tune-up.
