Artist Laura Letinsky's lush photographs, rife with allusions to Dutch still lifes, are meditations on the detritus of our lives. Whether they contain rotting fruit or discarded Styrofoam, her tabletop arrangements have always been visually stunning, deeply symbolic, and — as something of a signature — white-on-white, bathed in cool morning light. But in Letinksy's new series, the liminal state of twilight informs a new direction. Against rich grey tones, more grotesque objects (dead birds, oyster shells) mingle with half-eaten candy, evoking not the morning after, but a scenario in medias res, and a vaguely sinister one at that.
