Let's admit it: singer/songwriter types can be a little soft. Ike Reilly is of a different sort, as was evident at the get-go from his appealingly snarky debut, Salesmen and Racists (2001), which boasts big hooks and bar-ready songs like "Angels & Whores" and "Commie Drives a Nova." With a band at his back, Reilly is more brawling rocker than gentle bard, but in many ways he's still just a guy with a guitar telling stories (not unlike the Boss). They just happen to be fierce, funny stories, full of hardscrabble characters and lives on the rocks. Reilly's been at it for years, but his latest album, the appropriately titled Hard Luck Stories, has the same sardonic bite.
