Those who haven't kept up with Claire Denis since her hysteria-prone Trouble Every Day (2001) will be surprised by the low-key heartbreak of 35 Shots of Rum. The simple yet affecting tale of a single father who fears his daughter slipping away from their close bond is perhaps the most subtle and understated film of 2009. The uniformly excellent actors speak mostly in fidgets, bittersweet glances, and longing silence. The justly celebrated "dance scene" — in which a tender daddy/daughter moment, set non-ironically to the Commodores' "Nightshift," can't outlast the complicated reality around it — is a tour-de-force of resigned anguish. Denis has called 35 Shots a tribute to Ozu, the Japanese master of restraint; moments like that would have done him proud.
