Argentine director Lisandro Alonso has a thing for tight-lipped characters and solitary journeys. His latest film, Liverpool, takes place at the end of the world, in snow-draped Tierra del Fuego, where a hard-drinking middle-aged sailor disembarks to go visit his ailing mother and a little girl who might be his daughter. The story seems primed for a confrontation, but Alonso isn't one for drama or narrative disclosure. Like his earlier films La Libertad and Los Muertos (with which it forms a loose trilogy), Liverpool is enigmatic and assuredly formalist in its ways, yet no less resonant for it.
