These aren't your grandma's still-life paintings, even if the artist is inspired by memories of his own grandma's house in Puerto Rico. A recent SAIC grad, Angel Otero makes tactile, raw-feeling compositions using unusual materials such as dried oil-paint skins (glued to the surface) and silicone threads. The fragile-looking flowers and tumultuous table arrangements in the 11 works here have an oddly derelict vitality. While a few appear to be faintly luxurious gold or silver monochromes, bright colors peek out at the edges of each paint glob, restrained whispers of a vivid underbelly. Otero has been a buzz magnet recently, but it's well deserved; and two brand-new works — which introduce the heavy, chalky blackness of charcoal — suggest he's only starting to explore.
