Schwarz is one of the leading professors and scholars of Yiddish culture, having published many books on the subject, specifically focusing on the role of language and literature in the ongoing formation of Yiddish identity. Schwarz is currently the Barbara and Richard Rosenburg Fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, researching "Yiddish Literary Testimonies: Mordechai Strigler, Leib Rokhman, Eliezer Wiesel."
