With their rootsy charm and self-assured two-person attack, the Spares are Chicago's answer to Gillian Welch. Chanteuse Jodee Lewis and guitar whiz Steve Hendershot play bluesy, twangy songs of love lost and lessons learned, harmonizing gorgeously and moving the occasional audience member to tears. Despite critical raves for their album Beautiful and Treacherous Thing and a national songwriting award for the signature tune "Mexico," the unassuming duo prefers to let its winsome brand of Americana do the talking. They'll do just that tonight, celebrating their return from a Southern tour by playing some old favorites and previewing material from their forthcoming CD.
