Museum of Contemporary Art says…

If the "indulgent" criticisms tossed at later Fellini leave you as fraught as they did Alvy Singer, Fellini's Casanova (1976) is your pick — a wonderfully overripe feast that ups the episodic sumptuousness of, say, Satyricon (1969). Donald Sutherland's lost lothario rambles from one bizarre escapade to the next, while Fellini brushes off trifles like character motivation in favor of Enlightenment detail and elegant, Cinecettà-filmed mise en scène. No La Strada neorealism here, thanks. Danilo Donati's Oscar-winning costume design and Nino Rota's lavish score trump anything you'll get from cohesive structure.
