At one point in Noël Coward's Private Lives, Amanda — half of a divorced socialite couple who rekindle their romance (and soon after, their old bickering patterns) while on honeymoon with new spouses — sighs, "Extraordinary how potent cheap music can be." Coward was criticized more than once in his lifetime for dedicating his barbed wit to seemingly slight comedies of manners; but when staged well, this 1930 play still boasts as much interpersonal insight as it does zingy jabs. Eight-time Jeff winner Gary Griffin — fresh off a rapturously reviewed staging of West Side Story at the Stratford Festival — directs the repertory staple.
