The Green Mill says…

Founded five years ago by veteran musician/composer Rob Mazurek for a performance at the new concert hall in Millennium Park, Exploding Star Orchestra brought together a number of major talents from Chicago's jazz and avant-garde music scenes, including flautist Nicole Mitchell and members of Tortoise. If the original formation resembled a local super-group of sorts, the current octet is no less impressive. Before heading to the Green Mill, hunt down the group's two Thrill Jockey releases: 2008's collaboration with free-jazz legend Bill Dixon, and 2007's We Are All From Somewhere Else, which sidelines improvisational solos in favor of building an evocative narrative through the juxtaposition of various instruments' sounds.
