Linder Sterling's punk collages meet Paul Pope's Playboy groove in David van Alphen's exhibit at Rotofugi. Under glistening acrylic resin, big-collared, leisure-suited alpha types look cooly toward the viewer — only here, their heads have been lopped off, replaced by '70s-era consumer electronics. It's more playful than menacing, but with cut-ups lacquered over books like The Celestine Prophecy and gaudy stereo EQ miniatures resting on modern vinyl toys, van Alphen (aka Netherland) hits on something: that old pastel-and-rainbows vacuousness is alive and well in 2010. "Danny," the stereo-on-mannequin corner-piece, is a fine example. That iconic Smiley Face wasn't grinning with you, it seems to say, but Netherland's disembodied frames do.

Rotofugi says…

Awesome '60s-'70s inpsired retro collage art.

Artist and Rotofugi Gallery curator David "Netherland" van Alphen lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. Though David's family was from Holland, he was born in Toronto, and has been in Chicago for the last eight years. Being a child of the 70's has influenced him greatly and is reflected in most of his work. Juxtaposing images, his color choices and the new modern context comes through his nostalgic imagery and helps to isolate and enhance them into a beautiful montage. David does not resize, photocopy or scan any of the images he uses. All images are cut directly from their original source and and pieced together to keep each piece unique. David has shown at many galleries throughout the U.S. and sold out his first solo show at Rotofugi Gallery in January 2008.

Our gallery is open every Saturday from noon until 4pm, and can be opened upon request at almost any time by asking at our toy store next door.
