In the early '90s, the Norwegian black-metal scene gained international notoriety following a series of grisly acts committed by some of its key members. The book Lords of Chaos — which chronicled church burnings, alleged cannibalism, and murder — furthered the dubious sensationalism. Until the Light Takes Us opts for a more even-tempered approach, allowing players such as Fenriz (Darkthrone) and convicted murderer Varg Vikernes (ex-Mayhem, Burzum) to offer their own testimonials. Directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell fail to offer significant context or, worse, challenge Vikernes on his fascistic dabblings, but the interviews fascinate nevertheless. With a Lords of Chaos adaptation starring Twilight pin-up Jackson Rathbone as Vikernes in the works (seriously), Until the Light Takes Us is a finely timed glimpse beyond the tabloid headlines.
