Cartoonists Chris Ware and Charles Burns, both titans of the graphic-novel world, discuss their work and talk some shop today at Unity Temple. The too-edgy-for-Fortune Ware, an Oak Park resident, is best known for Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth, probably still the finest example of his instantly recognizable diagrammatic technique. Burns raised the bar himself with the award-winning wood-block-styled Black Hole. (Both are must-reads for anyone with even a passing interest in the medium.) Ticket costs can be put toward discounted copies of the artists' latest work, Burns' X'ed Out and Ware's Acme Novelty Library #20.

Unity Temple says…

Join graphic novelists Charles Burns and Chris Ware for an evening of conversation. Charles Burns' work rose to prominence in Art Spiegelman's Raw magazine in the 1980s. He has illustrated covers for Time, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine. His new, never-before serialized book is titled X'ed Out and is inspired by William S. Burroughs. Chris Ware, an Oak Park resident and artist, is the author of Jimmy Corrigan - the Smartest Kid on Earth and the annual amateur periodical The ACME Novelty Library. Ware's cartoons are featured in the permanent art collection of the Oak Park Public Library.
