Livewire's third annual short-play festival, this year performed in promenade at a Wicker Park art gallery, is almost shockingly affecting. Six plays, each about ten minutes long, include accomplished Chicago playwrights like Bret Neveau and Bilal Dardai. But the two best surprises are riffs on familial and romantic love by more emerging playwrights: Livewire company member Erin Barlow's The Kink, a sharply imagined tragicomic Thanksgiving dinner, and Mat Smart's A Sudden Fluke of Physics, which packs more humanity into a ten-minute love story than we've seen in many full-length plays.
