“As much as we love the stuff, it's true that metal is among the most confusingly self-segmented genres out there — perhaps only second to electronic/dance. The labels can be useful, but it's hard to begrudge any quizzical looks when critics and fans toss around something like "blackened crust-death-grind." Keidra Chaney (of ALARM, Chicagoist, and others) is here to help. Tonight she traces metal's roots and clues you into the meaning behind the lexicon. Poet/metalhead Michael Robbins joins the conversation, and Chicago Underground Film Festival curator Bryan Wendorf spins. Trve kvlt.”
Ever wonder what distinguishes Doom Metal from Black Metal? Keidra Chaney walks us through a geneology of Heavy Metal including an editorial analysis of what makes "true" metal different than, you know, stuff you've probably heard. Michael Robbins gives some personal musings on the value of Metal and talks about what its like to become a Metalhead later in life. Chicago Underground Film Festival Curator and Black Metal Junkie Bryan Wendorf keeps things loud before and after the lecture. Michael Robbins teaches poetry at Columbia College and is an associate editor of Chicago Review. Keidra Chaney has written and edited for indie publications and blogs including Clamor Magazine, Colorlines, Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, ALARM Magazine, Chicagoist.com and others.
