Anyone who caught the October premiere of Black Violet's first installment experienced an A/V collaboration as absorbing as it initially seemed unlikely. For act two, Fifth House Ensemble once again provides haunting chamber accompaniment to narrative illustrations by graphic novelist Ezra Claytan Daniels — think Chris Ware meets Charles Burns. The story of a scapegoated black cat in Plague-era London is rich with irony (the felines blamed for spreading the Black Death were, of course, enemies of rodents and agents of control). FHE's wind/string/bass/piano readings of Shostakovich, Brahms, and Queen (!) add even more expressive complexity to Daniels' already thick layers.
