A New York Times Best Book of 2007, Joshua Ferris' Then We Came to the End nailed corporate-cube life, as seen through a boomed-and-busting Chicago ad agency. The first-person plural voice would have screamed "gimmick" in less talented hands, but Ferris harnessed its potential, brilliantly capturing both office-drone groupthink and foxhole camaraderie with his collective "we." Today, Ferris discusses his fine follow-up, The Unnamed. The novel — about a man who compulsively walks to the point of exhaustion and the toll this condition takes on his family — finds Ferris nearly as adept at modern allegory as he was with perspective in its predecessor.
