The name Maya Lin goes hand in hand with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC. Less well-known is Lin's long-running practice as an artist. Inspired by natural forms, the sculptures in her current exhibition — not unlike her famous black-granite monument — reflect a combination of a pared-down elegance, physical presence, and sensitive choice of materials. Topographical formations rise from the ground in adjacent galleries, one replicating a mountain pass out of precisely-cut blocks of particleboard, another shaping wave-like swells out of 2x4s. On the walls, veins of real silver or slender push-pins trace the wandering paths of different rivers. Contrasts emerge between rough and refined elements, lightness and weight.
