T.C. Boyle is the kind of author who believes that a book should transport you, who doesn't shy away from the notion of literature-as-entertainment like it's a sign of the plague. His fiction also happens to be smart, though, with a convincing handle on diverse characters and, often as not, a fresh angle on true-to-history events. Between novels, the prolific Boyle limbers up with short stories, yet few writers today make the form seem so vital. This evening he reads from his recently-published collection, Wild Child, in which our baser instincts surface in a range of contexts, from a So Cal traffic jam to 19th century France.
