The main characters in Wells Tower's Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned aren't exactly happy or fortunate men (disappointment and bad luck flow freely), but this short-story collection itself is a thing of blazing life. Beneath Tower's dark vision of normal America — flush with slight absurdities and ready violence — lies a generosity of spirit, a certain openness to its floundering occupants, whose psyches he sensitively captures. It helps that Tower's descriptions are exceptional (unusual, yet spot on) and that he writes entertainingly with a confidence that should spur envy in plenty of veteran authors. That's right, this is a debut, and a marvelous one at that. Tonight Tower speaks with WFMT's Victoria Lautman.
