In his breakout project, 1998's paraSite, artist Michael Rakowitz produced inflatable shelters for homeless people that latch onto buildings' heating vents. His recent work has largely centered on Iraq. In Return (2006), for instance, he opened a storefront in Brooklyn that sold Iraqi dates and offered free shipping to Iraq, a symbolic endeavor that took on a public life within the community. Rakowitz's politically charged work has been shown worldwide — with an exhibition now at Tate Modern that exposes Saddam's fascination with Star Wars — but he keeps a lower profile in Chicagoland, where he lives and works. We'd love to see more of his projects pan out in this city, but for now we'll jump at the chance to hear him speak.
