The author's conversations with her skeptical mother act as springboards into Greek vs. Judeo-Christian philosophy, while paradoxical feelings about disrobing open up fascinating cans of pop culture, feminism, and the myth of the muse. Without the steady anchor Live Nude Girl enjoyed, Rooney's new essay collection, For You, For You I Am Trilling These Songs, isn't as end-to-end captivating; but her finest pieces — a look at her cousin's decision to become a nun, a funny plea against student plagiarism — are autobiographical non-fiction at its liveliest.
