Mitch Epstein, BP Carson Refinery, California, 2007, from the series American Power
Thursday Feb 18, 2010 (6pm)
Ferguson Lecture Hall at Columbia College Chicago

All the innovator's cred usually goes to William Eggleston (whose retrospective opens next week at the Art Institute), but Mitch Epstein was also among the early adopters of color photography, implicitly making his own case in the 1970s for its artistic viability. Since then Epstein has only gotten better, rising as one of the esteemed artists of his generation. In addition to making striking pictures, it helps that he's an acute observer of our national condition, whether in the series Family Business (2000-2003), which suggests the fragility of the American dream, or the more recent American Power (2003-2009), in which he ambitiously explores the implications of our country's hunger for energy.
