Reminiscent of puzzles, science experiments, and logic games, Celestial Navigations brings together rarely seen works of the great animator Al Jarnow. A peer of experimental filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage and Jonas Mekas, Jarnow's palette combines varied approaches to cel, stop motion, and time-lapse animation, exploring concepts like visual analogies, perspective, and time travel. The program highlights seven shorts, including Cubits, a match of sound and animation patterns; Autosong, an exercise in the limits of perspective; and the titular piece, in which Jarnow observes the movement of the sun in his own apartment and draws a connection to Stonehenge. Jarnow's playful animations reveal a natural, abstract, and often psychedelic fluidity that leaps beyond the confines of traditional narrative and introduces animation to the science curriculum.
