Oh, the "rocking" side project. For every great Grinderman there seems to be two meh Desaparecidos. Retribution Gospel Choir don't have much in common with Nick Cave's sleaze-blooze, but they're much closer to the former in terms of quality control than the musical hat-sampling exemplified by the latter. Alan Sparhawk and Steve Garrington, two-thirds of RGC and also members of Low, are slowcore veterans, but they're just as steady when they rev up to higher gears. Their latest, 2 (Sub Pop), is all classic-rock-touched crunch, full of squealing solos and clobbering power-trio rhythms. Still, with nifty production tricks, some delicate passages, and song titles like "68 Comeback," their smarts can't help but shine through the joyously stoopid rock moves.
