Max Palevsky Cinema says…

One of China's best filmmakers, Jia Zhang-ke essentially worked underground for years. Since 2004 he's proven adept at making subtle political films that are oblique enough to get the state's approval. (See the award-winning Still Life.) His latest, 24 City, centers on the closing of a government-owned factory to make way for urban developers. Known for long takes and stretches of near-silence, Jia shifts into a more talk-friendly mode here, building the film around a series of interviews. But the notable thing about 24 City is how it blends fiction and documentary, the real and imagined: half the interviews feature actual factory workers while the other half are monologues delivered by actors, with no stylistic markers to distinguish the two.
