Banjoist Béla Fleck is probably second only to Alison Krauss when it comes to dad-grass uncool, and from Graceland to Buena Vista the white guy's "discovery" of "world" music is always a thorny premise. Get past all that tonight and you'll be treated to some of the finest African musicians alive. Bassekou Kouyate and his band, Ngoni Ba, carry on the Ali Farka Touré mode of blending the contemporary and traditional in Malian music. Lesser known are Anania Ngoliga, a blind kalimba (thumb piano) master, and Tanzanian guitarist John Kitime. Fleck went looking for the African origins of his instrument, seemingly among the most American. That concept works okay, but it's second banjo to the incredible musicians at his side.
