Though she is best known as the "Godmother of Punk" (referring to her formative role in the scene that developed around CBGB in the late '70s), the prolific Patti Smith is also an acclaimed poet, author, journalist, and visual artist. She has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and her first album, Horses (1975) is hailed as one of the most important albums ever recorded. Smith's new memoir, Just Kids, brings to life her experience of New York in the '60s and '70s, and revolves around the legendary relationship between she and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
