Punk rock will always fit coming-of-age stories like tartan patterns on drainpipe pants; and this Pavement Group production of Gregory Moss' comic drama ably hits most of the right power chords. Suggestible Mickey and affectedly world-weary Duck start bands, struggle to self-identify, and, strangely, wear roller-skates throughout (along with the rest of the cast). Their tempered earnestness keenly reflects a subculture's contradictions, but the production's casting and details impress perhaps more than Moss' reliable themes. Two actors play both anarcho-crusties and hip scene-rats, brilliantly showing the same dead-ends where punk hivemind goes in either extreme; and the Repo Man-nodding generic labels are just one of several fine points that make punkplay feel wholly authentic.

Steppenwolf Garage Theatre says…

Steppenwolf says: When Duck and Mickey discover "punk" it's like nothing they have ever heard. It's fast - it's alive - it's already dead. Told at breakneck speed in a terrifyingly young vernacular, punkplay explores identity and the impulse to explode out of your adolescence. Pavement Group commits itself to providing dynamic performance opportunities for the next generation of theatre artists, arts managers, and audiences. We dedicate ourselves to new plays. Pavement Group endeavors to make contact with an audience previously unspoken to.
