“Dog & Pony presents this strange and astounding promenade show about the true story of identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons. The teenaged pair, while honoring a pact to speak only to each other, wrote a series of utterly bizarre stories; and co-writers/directors Seth Bockley and Devon de Mayo freely intermingle the stranger-than-fiction reality with the sisters' own fantastical inventions. Followers of Walkabout and Collaboraction (Bockley has designed for both) know that Chicago's promenade stagings are mixed bags, but when they work — as they do here — the results are intoxicating. Choreography, shadow puppets, and even moving walls add to the technical dazzle, but the terrific lead performances by Paige Collins and Ashleigh LaThrop still manage to keep Twins emotionally grounded.”
Steppenwolf says: This promenade performance breathes life into the extraordinary true story of identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons, Caribbean immigrants trying to find their place in provincial Wales in the 1970s. The young girls made a secret and powerful pact that went unbroken for over 20 years: speak to no adult, decide everything together, do everything in unison. But in the privacy of their room, the girls' fantasy life blossomed as they wrote hyper-kinetic novels of teenage lust and rebellion.
