Though not the first TV program to beam art to the public in their living rooms, Art:21 immediately felt like a more evolved species when it debuted in 2001. Thematic episodes highlight three or four contemporary artists via exclusive interviews, a sampling of their work, and a behind-the-scenes look at their creative processes. Last year's season featured Paul McCarthy, Mary Heilmann, Yinka Shonibare, and 11 others — top-shelf artists but not necessarily easy crowd-pleasers. Welcoming yet intelligent, and with a generously stocked website, Art:21 is a resource for longtime art lovers, too. This afternoon, assistant curator Wesley Miller screens selections and discusses the production process and other topics.
