Alaska's image could use polishing after the nonsense of rogue-style politics, so praise be for good ambassadors on the music front. Port O'Brien's two songwriters work summers in Alaska (one as a fisherman) and in the off-season saddle up the band in California. Their last LP, Threadbare, perfectly spikes the warmth of new-Cali folk-rock with a salty sea breeze from the north frontier. Headliners Portugal. The Man got their start in old Wasilla (what are the odds?) but now call Portland home. With a restless ambition, the band keeps switching things up; after the prog flavors of their early stuff and the mellow groovin' pop of 2009's The Satanic Satanist, they're promising bottled spontaneity and a beat-driven style on the new American Ghetto, due March 2nd.
