You've seen a William Eggleston or five, we'll put money on it, whether it's his famous ground-level trike shot or the cover of Spoon's new album, with a kid slumped in a garish yellow chair. The Memphis native was a trailblazing proponent of color photography before it was accepted as an art form, and he's been a profound influence on photographers since. Eggleston's first US retrospective, unveiled at the Whitney and now on view here at the Art Institute, offers the chance to take in four decades of his work, beyond the best-known pictures. The artist himself makes a rare public appearance on February 27 for a book-signing (3:30-5pm).
