The self-titled second album from DC grindcore/thrash revivalists Magrudergrind was among '09's most underappreciated metal finds. The Deathfest-bound trio has the feral grind-bark down, and though their alternating death-metal growl is less convincing it still plays like one of many charming nods to the band's hardcore roots. Mixed in also are tight, but not overly technical riffs; meaty, biscuit-snare-averse production, courtesy Kurt Ballou (Converge); even a Spazz-gleaned sprinkling of left-field hip-hop interludes. If you're not predisposed, it might be a hard sell. They don't have the crossover appeal of, say, Mastodon or Baroness, but anyone who gatewayed into extreme metal via OG hardcore will fall in love screaming.
