Although Mozart's operas made their way only slowly to opera houses in Italy, the major composers of nineteenth-century Italian opera knew just how significant he was. Rossini is legended to have said that Mozart was the ideal of his youth, the nemesis of his maturity, and the consolation of his old age. This lecture will explore the significance of Mozart's theatrical works for Italian nineteenth-century opera.
Speaker: Dr. Philip Gossett, Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor of Music, University of Chicago. Co-presented by the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. Admission is $9 ($6 for Newberry Library Associates who are at the Author level or above, having donated $100 or more to the Annual Fund) and includes wine, beer, and soft drinks. Doors open at 5:30 pm and programs begin at 6:15 pm.
