Chicago-based artist Armita Raafat employs elements of Persian and Islamic architecture in her work as a way to address broader themes like cultural ruination and survival in war-ravaged cities. Her new installation at threewalls plants honeycomb-like muqarnas (a repeating ornamental motif, edged here in rich blue pigment) along the gallery walls at sporadic points, as if most of a larger, rough-hewn structure had crumbled away or been torn down. It's a relatively spare exhibition visually, risking a breezy drive-by from gallery-goers; but there are weighty ideas behind Raafat's work, and her artist talk today is an invitation to dig deeper.
