Maybe it's the expanded budget or the longer running time; whatever the reason, great sketch comedy troupes tend to make inauspicious feature lengths. The promise-to-letdown ratio is off the charts even with greats such as the Kids in the Hall (Brain Candy) and the Mr. Show guys (Run, Ronnie, Run). Mystery Team, the film debut of NYU ensemble Derrick Comedy, isn't the masterpiece we've been waiting for, but it keeps in line with the best of their shorts ("Blowjob Girl," "Bro Rape"): slight, yet intelligent and gleefully absurd. The Derricks obviously had a ball playing overgrown Encyclopedia Brown types, high-school seniors trying to solve a murder to prove their detective skills, and in Mystery Team's finest moments that giddiness is undeniably infectious.
