Aspen Mays' photographs are among the more colorful, eye-catching works to grace the 12x12 exhibition series, but they're also the product of a methodical rigor that stems from the artist's fascination with the world of science. For one project, Mays individually photographed every single leaf on a summertime tree, resulting in a wall-spanning multitude of green. In another Herculean effort, she requested all 1900+ books about Einstein through inter-library loan, organizing their spines into gravity-taunting rainbows that arc between two chairs. If these cataloging efforts pick up the systematic playbook of Conceptual Art in certain respects, they're hardly austere or averse to aesthetics; Mays finds visual forms that embody her ideas and infuse her work with warmth and wit.
