At least since the Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle threesome paid their Dita Von Teese worship, burlesque has been flung into the mainstream like so many carelessly tossed fetish stockings. There are plenty of revivalists who stay true to its indie/underground roots (see locals like Michelle L'amour, Belmont Burlesque, and Girlie-Q); but Varietease is especially attuned to its history. More than just striptease — though they're certainly, heatedly that — Backdoor Aly's productions incorporate traditional tease, cabaret, vaudeville comedy, and live music into a full burlesque revue. Performers such as Mae the Bellydancer and Dizzy Lizzy Delicious are happy paradigms of truth in advertising.
