When Be Your Own Pet's teen-scream punk inevitably flamed out, former bassist and heckler-beater extraordinaire Jemina Pearl continued to collaborate with fellow BYOP alum John Eatherly. By aesthetic choice or simply the effect of growing up some, the result, her debut Break It Up (Ecstatic Peace, 2009), wisely trades in much of her old band’s adolescent snot for a little more sex appeal and a lot more self-assured swagger and pop hooks. Pearl recasts herself as a millennial Debbie Harry, mining new wave, punk, and '60s pop. On the Iggy-assisted single "I Hate People," she perfectly plays the tough "X Offender" with just a hint of "Heart of Glass" vulnerability.
