Everyone may have a certain building etched into memory, whether one that's magnificent or just personally meaningful. Projected inside a large, cardboard-and-wood structure, Susan Giles' new video cuts between individuals trying to describe that remembered building in words and gestures. The speakers could almost be talking about the same place; their interlaced descriptions stress how certain kinds of architecture regularly make an impression and suggest a common struggle to find the right words. In conjunction, Giles exhibits four meticulous paper models (Memory Palaces I-IV) that fuse assorted architectural elements, such as various towers and minarets, to create spiky forms. They feel at once refined and aberrant, man-made creations morphing into crystalline outgrowths.
