A ring of mystical lights keeps appearing among the trees in Michiko Itatani's paintings of forests, which are draped in darkness or flushed white. She counterbalances the fanciful aspect of this leitmotif by rendering midnight shadows and beams of moonlight in a manner that could almost be described as architectural (a laborious application of thin parallel lines to create overlapping geometric fields). Chinese characters cover other sections, adding texture and an enigmatic profusion of language, without quite functioning as a clear cultural signifier. Although it's true for most artworks that small jpegs don't do any favors, this is certainly the case here, where they fail to convey the effect of the paintings' scale or their formal complexities.
