In the hands of director Charles Newell, Tony Kushner's adaptation of Corneille's baroque reverie is equal parts gorgeous vision and comic vigor. Kushner elevates the story — a father's visit to a magician to see what has become of the son he banished — through fresh, sharp, often incredibly witty verse to explore the paradoxes of romantic and filial love. The show is an aesthetic triumph at every level, with an especially luxurious set, monumental acting, and an overall intellectual freshness that speaks to the relevance of theatre and the role of theatricality in social and domestic life.

Court Theatre at the University of Chicago says…

Court Theatre says: Tony Kushner brings his sophisticated style and breathtaking language to the French Baroque's most powerful romance. A father's attempt to find his estranged son raises the curtain on a world of theatrical magic, outrageous humor, and true, complicated love.
